10-Point Plan to address the information crisis

Big Tech’s business model is harming us all by amplifying hate and lies. Our children are hurting, our rights are being abused and we are losing our shared reality. This means we cannot come together to solve big challenges like climate change, sexism and racism.

This is one of the most complex challenges of our time. But we can step up. It’s time to reclaim our rights in the digital age.

The 10-Point Plan to address the information crisis is a manifesto for change. It will transform the internet from a space monopolised by profiteering Big Tech companies to one that puts our rights first. Signed by Nobel laureates and over 100 organisations and individuals, it charts a path to a world where technology serves humanity.

Sign it. Use it. Amplify it.

Why

Globally, we are in the grips of an information crisis.

Rapid advances in artificial intelligence are making things worse. Lies and hate are spreading faster than ever before. The huge potential of technology to advance our societies is being undermined.

Social media and other tech companies are pursuing profit at the expense of democracy, human rights and social cohesion. Their business model depends on tracking and targeting us to maximise engagement. It promotes divisive, hateful content to keep us clicking and scrolling. It is toxic.

Authoritarian politicians are exploiting these technologies to further subvert our rights, while cracking down on independent media. Right now, technology is working against humanity, democracy and society.

Facebook’s products harm children, stoke division, weaken our democracy and much more.

and must act,

before it’s too late

Opportunity

Reining in big tech harms will benefit us all.

Nobel Laureates and journalists Dmitry Muratov and Maria Ressa have developed a plan outlining 10 urgent actions that rights-respecting governments and the UN should take.

It includes:

  • Protecting citizens’ rights to privacy with robust and properly enforced data protection laws.
  • Rebuilding independent journalism as the antidote to tyranny.
  • Ending the surveillance-for-profit business model and the tracking and harvesting of users’ personal data.
  • Detoxing the algorithms that promote hate and lies.
  • Ending discrimination through technology and ensuring Big Tech companies treat people everywhere equally.

The more people who support the plan and join with us to call for action the greater our chance of holding the Big Tech companies accountable.
